Airbrushed Snow Scene - Photoshop Tutorial

Jacquelin Vanderwood

December 2004

Start by outlining the sky with the Pen tool. In the Paths palette name the layer.

Hit the Enter key to make the sky active. Create a gradient using the colors below.

Find the longest vertical part, hold down the Shift key and apply the gradient.

Using the same method but on a new layer below the sky, outline the mountains and apply the gradient.

For the low lying hills create a new layer below the others and use the same method again. Apply the gradient shown.

Create a new layer and outline the lowest hills. Apply the gradient shown.

Again use the same method on a new layer placed at the top.

Before completing the trees I proceeded to color the house using one layer for the main house, one layer for the roof, and one layer for the chimney.

Below all other layers I filled in the base snow with light yellow.

Here is what we have so far.

For the shadows I combined using the Pen tool and the brush.

I used darker versions of the blue on the snow to add more shadow depth by the tree and house. Then I applied Gaussian Blue to the snow to soften.

I then added color using the airbrush to complete the house.

For the mountains I added snow color using the airbrush and then added highlight from the sun to make the mountains stand out. I used Liquefy to draw out the snow at the bottom.

Next I added the same light yellow highlight to the lower hills and used Motion Blur point downward to soften the look.

I added snow to the tree on the left and then used Liquefy to draw out the snow in a more natural manner.

I added color to the trees, then applied Motion Blur at an angle then did a Fade to Lighten.

I then decided at this point to call the snow scene finished.
